On Sunday, 12th October, Cambridge University (CUPC) held their
first match of the Michaelmas term at their new club – Cambridge
County Polo Club, situated in Lode, just outside of central
Cambridge. The weather held out for an exciting afternoon, where a
hard fought and close match took place. The players, having been
used to the green, grassy turf of grass polo, found it partially
challenging to make the transition back to arena polo, as is custom
in winter. Yet they impressed onlookers making good use of the
walls, hitting the larger arena ball off the sides and embarking on
plenty of rigorous ride offs, spurts of galloping and much ferocious
A total of three Cambridge Alumni members, took on their current
University member rivals in a number of tense chukkas, but
fortunately for CUPC, the Alumnis weren’t able to reach victory, the
afternoon culminating in a 9-8 victory for CUPC current students.
All-in-all, the day was a success and an indicator of the strong
relationship the club maintains between current and alumni members.
